End Of An Era And Pre Hexham

It was the end of an era today when Badger Foot left for his new permanent loan home with Rachael Maclean. Badger won thirteen times a mix of chases and point to points often giving his jockeys their first ride under rules. He was usually the horse our employees rode in their interviews, he would be the first that they would school and normally the first that they would ride in races. His roll of…

Non Runners And Sales Dates

A bit of a non starter day at Kelso as we took out all three runners due to the fast ground. Kelso had watered their track and while it would have been fine for true good ground horses I did not feel that it would suit any of our three runners; it is always sad to take horses out of races, but we have to treat each horse as an individual and their welfare is paramount.

We had a good day…

Travels And Pre Kelso

With the horses in training sales coming up Scu and I were in Ireland last weekend to watch a couple of point to points and to assess the form of them. We find it invaluable to see the quality of the horses in the parade ring before the race and to gauge how competitive the race is going to be. Undoubtedly with the prices of race winners getting higher it is paying to look at the placed horses as…

Ayr And Hexham Roundup

A busy few days racing as the new season gets under way.

At Hexham the season started quietly for us with Celtic Flames hitting the second last fence badly as he was making his challenging move. His fifth placing does not do him justice, but we will need to build his confidence back up over fences. Rossamilan is similar; he did not take much of a cut at the jumps and we will try him back…

Different Dynamics And Pre Hexham

As we head into May we have a slightly different dynamic to the yard as the number of horses in full training reduces, many starting their holidays, a few retiring. We also start looking for new talent for the yard and with that in mind Derek has been in Ireland for us this week, and we are heading there to the point to points this weekend. The crazy sales season is about to start, more of that…

By Royal Appointment.. well sort of..

One For Arthur was on his best behaviour when meeting HRH The Princess Royal at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies this morning. Princess Anne who is Chancellor of the University and Patron of the R(D)SVS was there to open the newly expanded equine care hospital, a facility that offers top of the range operating facilities as well as a new intensive care unit.

Princess Anne also…

Finishing With A Rattle

We have had a great season with a total of forty six winners and £355,000 prizemoney at a strike rate of 13%. This betters last season's winners and is a great achievement considering that we lost many meetings with the snow and frost.

April was an extraordinary month; having battled through some of the worst winter weather in February and March the yard reaped their reward with eleven…

Two Winners At A Happy Perth Festival

The past three days have shot by as the Perth Festival hosted twenty two races over three days of sunshine and showers, we were delighted for the yard to have two winners and plenty of placed horses.

The first day started awkwardly when Scu and I were not sure about the going which seemed patchy especially in the home straight and at the home bend. The stewards felt that it was fine and…

OrionInverness Stays In Form When Third At Hexham

OrionInverness backed up his return to form with a third place at Hexham this afternoon. Jumping a lot more confidently than he has in the past he just stayed the three miles on this stiff track. He has given the Tay Valley Chasers great fun this spring and could be at Perth in May if the ground remains on the easy side. Stephen and connections are pictured at the debrief in the winners enclosure.

Ballycool…

Sky Khan Back To Form At Ayr

Sky Khan ran a stormer to be a close second on his comeback run at Ayr this afternoon. A horse who loves the hustle of a big race he was produced expertly by Blair but just failed to catch the leader. This run should set him up for the summer and his owners, Ormello Way are delighted to have him back in form. Pictured are Willie Logan and Tony and Tina Evans; Andrew Millar and my father were not…
